the drum is honor enough

Brennan has done some really interesting things with the concept of drums and rhythms, creating open-ended compo- sitions built not so much around harmonic material as around rhythmic cells and punctuations. It’s compelling not only because it eludes the clichés and stock patterns these kinds of situations can often fall into, but because it’s a great way to structure improvi- sation—True, Brennan loves to flirt with melody—hinting at it, taking it apart, and then tantalizingly sinking his teeth right into it. - Cadence

He aims a swipe at the "SO-SOs, or Same-Old-Same-Olds" of free impro- visational arbitra- riness with four “metagroove oriented compositions" which brennan refers to as a synthesis woven from grooves that move in opposite directions. -Bad Alchemy

Brennan's an abstract expressionist with chops. He's utterly coherent in his free associative improvisa- tions, and he imbues his music with a great deal of timbral and rhythmic variety. His compo- sitions are fresh and quite original. Patrick Brennan's a first class saxophonist and com- poser, and his trio is one of the most interesting I've heard in some time. - Cadence

EVOLUTION
ORIENTATION

"The congruence of nature, though, is a condition that often explodes notions of reflection or predictability: volcanoes, floods, waterfalls, tsunamis: poly-rhythm, syncopation, poly-meter, poly-dimensionality in time. It is beyond bifurcation as a polar phenomenon. This type of beat has a spherical relationship to direction much like a simultaneous explosion and implosion that radiates out and in all directions respectively.... An identification of the intangible “swing” can be influenced by an orientation in time (i.e., syncopation) that is bifurcated with out being polarized. This opens “swing” up to more than a few possibilities." from MO' Swing for Every Body! (c)2005 - David Pleasant

"...An onslaught of rhythmic accompaniment by Hill Greene...was loud, fast, and visceral. ...[His] work on the upright bass was diverse and committed.. His solos, whether arco or pizzicato, used the full potential of the instrument, including choral effects and contrivances
."
"As usual, Hill Greene created a resonating musicality, with full focus and emotional pathos...Hill Greene has a bright future as Solo Bassist, Composer, Accompanist, and Music Director."

THE MUSIC has the structural thoroughness of classical musics - and often the energy and intensity of "avant garde" and rocking musics - while fundamentally extending from the improvisational, tonal and rhythmic rhythmic of jazz & its cousins and ancestors.

THE COMPOSITIONS are more than tunes. Each explores distinct overall orchestral interrelationships, which demands a more intensive engagement from musicians - who are asked to improvise in terms of the composition's concepts - than would more a more conventional setting.

THE EVOLUTION of the music, and the ensemble, has been toward an alternative to both the unfocused tendencies of "free" musics and the rote conventions of "inside" playing, and away from stereotypical orientations.

THE ORIENTATION is toward developing a more evolved level of musicianship in ensemble and improvisational terms wherein a reciprocal creative relationship evolves with each individual musican, and the peculiarities of each player become part of the compositions as the compositions become more "one's own."

EDUCATION in ths form of workshops, clinics, lecture demonstrations, open rehearsals, etc. complements the group's perfromance activities from community & public school settings to the university. These musicians take seriously the sharing of perceptions, insights & techniques with the larger community as well as with peers & developing artists.
